Anxiety is a normal part of being a person. In some cases, it gets amplified to a level that is difficult to manage. Anxiety can become much more easily manageable when the right work is done. Jeremy teaches clients how to recognize their anxiety and the areas in which it is impacting them. He teaches effective techniques for emotional regulation and managing intrusive thoughts. Often, improvement can begin quickly.
Confidence is, in many ways, the opposite of anxiety. Working with anxiety is a process of moving from fear and insecurity to confidence and resilience. Along this process, beliefs such as"the world is unsafe" or "I am not good enough" may be encountered. When people see themselvess as not good enough, they will tend to avoid challenges. This create a self-fulfilling effect. If we aren't challenged, we do not know what we are capable of, and we don't derive any sense of accomplishment from our daily life.
Metaphors can be helpful for understanding this:
A plant that is overwatered never develops a deep root system and is easily blown over by the wind.
We don't get better at math by working the same problems we've already mastered.
A butterfly needs the challenge of emerging from the chrysalis in order to be capable of flying.
All this being said, it is also true that too much challenge is not helpful. We can injure ourselves by lifting something that is too heavy. We need the right amount of challenge in order to thrive.
Often, once a client has made progress in managing their anxiety, they choose to work on its underlying causes. This deeper work can take the form of talk therapy, Brainspotting, or EMDR
