Parenting is never easy, and the challenges can feel overwhelming when a child is struggling. While parents desire safety and success for their children, there can be many questions about how a parent might best have influence.
Jeremy has worked with parents and families in a variety of therapeutic settings for over 20 years. Drawing on this experience, he helps parents and other family members to examine both their agreements and disagreements, times of joy and times of conflict, and to find their way forward by further developing and maintaining meaningful relationships.
In addition to connecting and maintaining high-value relationships with their children, Jeremy helps parents to empower their children. This empowerment involves acknowledging the child's power to choose their actions. It is important to both know and to communicate an understanding of the fact that we can not control our children. This will help us to avoid power-struggles. Another aspect of empowerment involves viewing the child as capable of making reasonable choices. A parent's view of a child's competence will often become a self-fulfilling prophecy, so it is extraordinarily important to avoid limiting a child through our own assumptions of their ability or lack thereof.
Many parents seek out coaching services as a result of difficulty they have had in managing a child's behavior. Parent and family coaching also includes examination of efforts parents have made to correct inappropriate or disruptive behavior. Jeremy's coaching related to addressing behavior flows from his decades of experience working with youth in residential treatment programs and coaching their parents on how to translate the progress made in treatment into the home environment. This is an area of specialty in which Jeremy can provide detailed analysis of what has and has not worked and provide targeted coaching to improve the situations parents are facing.
Parent and family coaching begins from a foundation of curiosity about each parent and/or family member's current situation and hopes for the future. From there, any of the following approaches may be incorporated:
▪ Relationship-Based Intervention
▪ Neuroscience–Based Interventions
▪ Motivational Interviewing
▪ Psycho-educational Treatment Model
▪ Parent Management Training
▪ Choice Theory
