Throughout his work with youth, Jeremy has been fascinated by the invaluable work done by direct-care workers or youth mentors who dedicate themselves to the care of the youth they serve. The skillful intervention of youth mentors that he observed and sought to emulate during his first job in the field sparked his desire to build a career in therapeutic work. This work has remained a passion throughout Jeremy's career as he moved from direct-care work to clinical and on to administrative roles. Jeremy believes that high-quality direct-care work is a crucial thread that runs throughout an effective program. Ideally, every staff member who interacts with the students or clients of a program seeks to be their best at establishing relationships with youth, coaching, and intervening in potentially problematic situations.
Supervision and management of youth mentors can sometimes become overly focused on crisis response and correcting errors. Jeremy believes youth mentors deserve detailed training in what it looks like to do this job well. We want youth mentors that feel capable, confident, and skilled. We want these team members to bring a high level of professionalism to their role. If that is to be a reasonable expectation, we need to provide a high level of professional training.
Jeremy has developed a training entitled Mastering the Art of Mentorship: Tools for Building Relationships, Group Management, and Preventing Escalation. This training consists of 24 skills that he has learned over his career. Some of these skills were taught in early jobs, and others have come through experience as he sought to improve both in doing this work and in training and supervising others. This training has been designed to boost both the enthusiasm and the effectiveness of youth mentors.
For organizations participating in this training, the process begins with a one-hour call in which we can discuss your needs and how the training may be tailored to your organization. We will then schedule in-person training of your organization's staff. Following this training, Jeremy remains available for consultation at no additional charge.
